1950, 166MM/212, sn 024MB, Mille Miglia '51 (Tecnomodel, limited 48/120, resin)
Chassis: 024MB
Delivered new early in 1950 to Scuderia Marzotto, this 166 MM was originally fitted with a Touring built Barchetta body. In this guise it was raced by Umberto Marzotto in that year's Targa Florio and Mille Miglia. A clutch failure ended the charge early on Sicily while the car suffered a heavy accident in the latter. Instead of repairing the extensively damaged car to its original configuration, Marzotto commissioned Carrozzeria Fontana to create a unique Coupe bodywork that was later nicknamed Uovo or egg for its unusual design. This one-off design was then raced with some success through to 1952. Fitted with a 212 Inter engine, it was sold to the United States where it was briefly raced by Ignacio Lozano on the West Coast. Passing through several hands, the one-off Uovo remained in North America through to the mid-1980s. It was then acquired by an Italian enthusiast, who had the car restored before campaigning it in events like the Mille Miglia retrospective for several years. From the late 1990s, it has only very rarely been seen in public but it has now been consigned to the RM Sotheby's 2017 Monterey auction.
