1965, 275 GTB Speciale, 06437 - Ferrari in Miniatures

The second 275 GTB chassis built by Ferrari, this car was directly dispatched to Carrozzeria Pininfarina. It was to become Battista Pininfarina's personal car and the only 275 GTB clothed in-house and not by Scaglietti like the regular production cars. While the same basic design was used, the one-off bodywork shares no common parts with the Scaglietti bodied examples. Even the inner structure supporting the exterior panels is bespoke to this car. Virtually every detail of the car is different from the smaller bumpers, one-off grille and headlight surrounds to the external chrome hinges and distinct diffusor at the rear. No expense was spared on the interior as well with comfortable, leather trimmed seats, a set of Heuer Rally-Master stopwatches and many custom knobs and switches. The car was finished in a metallic blue-green from the Alfa Romeo catalog.

Originally not intended as a show car, Battista Pininfarina was nevertheless so proud of his latest achievement that he unveiled his personal 275 GTB at the company's winter press conference at St Moritz early in 1965. Later that year, chassis 06437 was also shown at the Frankfurt, Paris and Turin motor shows. At the end of the year, Pininfarina also entered the one-off 275 GTB in the Florence Concours d'Elegance. Following an appearance at the January 1966 Brussels Motor Show, the car was sold to a young Italian enthusiast. Battista Pininfarina died just a few months later, making this one of the last cars the great master was directly involved with. It was sold to the United States shortly thereafter and eventually ended up in the ownership of Brandon Wang during the early 1990s. By that time, it had been painted dark red but did retain all of the unique body features. It was then restored to its original colours by Ferrari specialist Michael Sheehan. In 1992, it was shown at a variety of events, including at Pebble Beach where it placed second in class.

Following its brief spell on the show circuit, it was sold to a very private collector of coachbuilt and competition Ferraris in 1993. Since then, it has not been seen in public and attempts of other Ferrari collectors to convince the long term owner to part with the car have proven pointless. That changed in 2018, when it was consigned to headline the Gooding & Co. Scottsdale Auctions. The one-off, ex-Battista Pininfarina 275 GTB Speciale is estimated to sell for over $8 million.
